“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24
It is easy to imagine that we will notice God more when something significant happens. We look for Him in answered prayers, unexpected blessings, major decisions, moments of unmistakable beauty, or seasons when we desperately need His help. Yet much of our life is not made up of extraordinary moments. Most of it happens in ordinary days filled with familiar responsibilities, repeated routines, small interruptions, meals, work, conversations, and quiet stretches of time that may not seem particularly important.
Psalm 118:24 reminds us that this is the day the Lord has made. Not only the wonderful days or the days we will remember years from now, but this particular day with whatever it happens to contain.
We can become so focused on what comes next that we barely inhabit the day God has already given us. We think about what needs to happen tomorrow, what we hope will change next month, what we are waiting for, or what we wish had happened differently yesterday. Meanwhile, the hours directly in front of us quietly pass.
Living attentively with God invites us to return to the present.
That does not mean every day will feel joyful. There are days marked by grief, exhaustion, disappointment, uncertainty, or responsibilities we would rather not carry. When Scripture tells us to rejoice and be glad, it does not require us to pretend those things are pleasant. Biblical joy has never depended upon every circumstance being comfortable. It comes from knowing that even here, in a day we might never have chosen for ourselves, God has not left us.
His presence is not reserved for church services, prayer closets, mountaintop experiences, or moments when we feel especially spiritual. God can meet us while we are making breakfast, driving to work, folding laundry, watering plants, sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, watching rain against a window, or stepping outside long enough to notice the sky.
Sometimes we miss those moments because we are waiting for something more impressive.
We may think an ordinary moment cannot possibly matter spiritually, but Jesus spent much of His ministry meeting people in ordinary places. He walked roads, shared meals, sat beside water, visited homes, noticed children, watched people work, and spoke about seeds, birds, bread, flowers, and weather. He continually pointed toward things people encountered every day and showed them that the ordinary world was already full of reminders of God.
Perhaps we do not always need more signs of His presence. Perhaps sometimes we simply need to slow down enough to notice the ones already around us.
Look at the day you have actually been given rather than the one you wish you had. Notice the light coming through the window, the sound of birds outside, the warmth of something you are drinking, the person sitting across from you, or the quiet moment that appeared unexpectedly in the middle of everything else. None of these things has to become profound. They can simply remind us that we are here, God is here, and this moment belongs to Him too.
There will always be another task waiting and another concern trying to pull our minds into tomorrow. There will also be days when noticing anything good requires more effort than usual. Yet even then, we can ask God to help us become attentive to the life that is still happening around us.
We do not have to wait for life to become extraordinary before we begin living it with Him. God is present in the remarkable moments, but He is also present in the quiet, repetitive, ordinary ones that make up most of our lives.
This is the day the Lord has made. Whatever today holds, we can meet Him here.
A Prayer for Today
Father, thank You for the day You have placed before me. Help me not to hurry through it while my mind is somewhere else. Teach me to notice Your presence in ordinary moments and to recognize the gifts I might otherwise overlook.
When today is difficult, remind me that Your presence does not depend upon my circumstances. When today is peaceful, help me receive that peace with gratitude rather than rushing ahead to whatever comes next. Give me eyes to notice what You have placed around me and a heart willing to meet You in the life I am actually living.
